One Cloche here, One Cloche there

Traditional. Glass. Bell-shaped. In vogue.

The glass cloche has been used in several different ways through the years. Cloches have become highly sought after accessories in home decor today.

A little history: “The French developed the glass cloche, or bell jar, formed of a solid piece of glass shaped like a dome. The purpose was to protect an early garden plant from bleak cold and frost. This would hasten their crops to maturity. The Dutch and English expanded the idea with handlights, lantern style, faceted pyramidal covers made from glass panes and frames of cast iron. Today French cloches', Dutch and English handlights styles are much on the garden scene. As well as functional, they make a wonderful garden accent. Accent your garden table, or use as a food cover for your next gathering.” source: English Creek Gardens

My collection of glass cloches are kept together atop the dry bar in the breakfast room. They are easily accessible for a wide variety of uses.

One of my favorite cloches is in my master bedroom and holds a framed baby picture of mine with my very own copper dipped baby shoes. I am so happy my mom had saved this memento.

Another cloche is in the guest band atop a vintage stand holding various robin’s egg soaps.

A third can be found on a parlor end table surrounding a piece of white coral laying atop a chunky candle stick.

4

A fourth surrounds a silver dish filled with shells on a wooden base.

Lastly, one covers the array of sweets always kept on display in the kitchen.

Do you use cloches? If so, how?

  11. I love cloches. I have some that I'm not using at the moment, but I never part with them since they are so versatile. I never know when I may need one! I like how you've used yours. I love the various sizes and shapes you have too.
