Strolling Magazine Street by the Slice


During our Uptown Tour of Shotgun Homes this past Saturday, J & I stopped in at Slice Pizza for lunch. Slice never disappoints.

Located next door to Whole Foods Uptown, Slice offers a wide selection of pizzas and calzones.

In early 2003 the owners of Slice found a location that they were convinced could be the home of a niche food product that had not made its way into the annals of the New Orleans food culture: Pizza! After spending a couple of year’s making pies at home, the owners knew the time had come to introduce the world to New Orleans’ style pizza, and the Slice Pizzeria concept was born. Taking over the dress shop at 1513 St. Charles Ave. and converting it to a pizzeria took a grueling year and a half, but the results were well worth it! Using local Artesian water, King Arthur flour, and a variety of imported, organic, and super fresh toppings, the proprietors drove home the idea that you could have your pie and eat it too, especially if you wanted to try it a slice at a time. There are two locations of Slice New Orleans. The doors on St. Charles Ave.were opened in July of 2004, and on Magazine St. in October of 2010. Also offering a full bar, creative salads, delicious pasta, unique appetizers and tasty sandwiches, Slice believes that they have achieved the goal of creating a distinctly New Orleans pizzeria, worthy of the title earned from the Gambit Weekly Readers’ Poll: Best in New Orleans 2011! After a round of Bloody Marys, J & I each had a delicious Caesar salad. photo_1 I dined on the Specialty Pizza: Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Meatball, Onion, Mushroom, Peppers, Green and Kalamata Olives, and Extra Cheese. I also had a slice of the day’s special pizza: Shrimp and Andouille Sausage. photo_3 J had a slice of the Greek Pizza: Artichoke Hearts, Imported Feta, Kalamata Olives, and Red Onions ~optional Anchovies (and I forgot his other choice). photo_4 The pizza is perfectly thin and so good.   1. Looks delicious! There is nothing better than a good slice of pizza or two. ;) Tom Fitzmorris likes it, too! This is what he has to say about it: "Even the first step toward convenience in the making of pizza brings it down. Slice uses none of those. They make their own dough, hand-toss it, bake it in a very hot flatbed oven that makes the bottom crisp, and buy top cheeses, excellent meats and fresh vegetables for the toppings. The offbeat daily specials--many of which don't seem they belong in such a utilitarian place--shows that the people in the kitchen aren't just following a formula. They actually know how to cook." That's quite a compliment from the "known food critic" in NOLA! Have a great day! xoxo
