#tbt {Ma Maison... The Dining Room}

I adore #tbt. It gives me and my readers a chance to look at posts from "way back when."

This post of my dining room exactly 5 years ago on May 18, 2012. The structure has not changed, but many things look very different. I will have to do a revisit of Ma Maison posts because many aspects of my New Orleans home have been tweaked since the beginning of this blog.

Walk from the “stair parlor” through the vestibule into the rear of my home. The first room that you enter to your left is the dining room. The rear of the home consists of an open floor plan dining room, den, breakfast room, and kitchen.

My dining room consists of a large solid wooden table with 6 dining chairs. More chairs are available for larger sit-down meals. There is a buffet holding some of my serveware, a shelving unit, and a glass front hutch housing some of my favorite things.
The dining table was purchased prior to moving into our Atlanta home in 2004 from a design shop, J & M Furniture on Ellsworth on the trendy Atlanta Westside. The table is solid teak wood. It is very heavy. Around the table are a set of six antique chairs found at Scott Antique Market also in Atlanta. The chairs were already covered in a striped fabric. I thought the fabric was perfect as the fleur de lis reminded me of my home in New Orleans. I keep debating whether or not to recover them. I would really like a linen burlap look. Perhaps I’ll have my favorite seamstress whip up a mock up of a seat cover to try.

Atop the table which is ever changing are two silver candlesticks from Hill Street Warehouse, a spring green toile table runner from Aux Belles Choses, and the large Alison Evans clam shell bowl from Chic Chateau.

Above the table are two pendant lamps with burlap shades from Ballard Designs.

20

Under the table is an indoor/outdoor rug from Ballard Designs. I had a nicer rug when we moved in but the very first Mardi Gras put an end to it. Sisal rugs do not mix well with spilled drinks and dropped cake.

24

The buffet is also from J & M Furniture and features three drawers and shelves. The drawers house my favorite place card holders, napkins, napkin rings, and taper candles. The shelves hold many plates, platters, and fine serveware.(I’ll show you my wares in a future blog. I promise.)

16

Atop the buffet are two lamps purchased in 2006 from Paris Market & Brocante in Savannah (one of my all-time favorite shops). The Alison Evans oyster coffee table bowl is a past Christmas gift from J. The bowl is from Hazelnut on Magazine. It is filled with vintage-style nautical glass balls and rope.

14

On the wall above the buffet is an original Southern bird oil. On top of the painting are more of my collection of Alison Evans ceramic oyster pieces. Addicted…yes!

15

On the left side wall of the buffet is a hand forged wine rack purchased many years ago from Old Estate. Each is hand made in Mexico.

13

On the right side wall of the buffet is a trio of framed fruit oils also from my days at Chic Chateau.

12

One of my favorite new additions to the dining room in recent years is the Frenchkeeper’s Shop Shelves from Wisteria. I love open shelving for easy access, so I adore having much of my serveware at arm’s reach.

6

The top shelf house a large metal faux bois metal ice bucket from Zodax, two cake plates, and a large French style apothecary drink dispenser from Two’s Company. There is also a mercury glass vessel from Orient Expressed on Magazine Street.

9

The second shelf features crystal decanters, silver ice bucket, twig tongs from Michael Aram, an Oyster tureen from dk clay, and a silver round cake stand. The platter on the wall is a favorite from Oysteria.

8

On shelf three are my favorite fleur de lis embossed dishes(most given to me by Honey) from Abigail’s. A Beatriz Ball olive tray is in front. The two crown cake plates are from dc2 of Savannah. The sea urchin bowl is a Christmas gift from Honey picked up at Hazelnut.

10

On the lowest shelf, I store more of my Abigail dishes and two sets of flatware. The lower one is real silver flatware that I inherited from my dad’s parents. It was given to my grandmother for Mother’s Day many, many years ago(more in a later blog). Atop the flatware boxes sits a Vagabond House crab cutting board tray.

11

The antique glass front hutch also houses my vast collection of glassware, serveware, and salt and pepper shakers. I especially love the antler handled serving pieces J gifted me years ago from another favorite Atlanta shop, Boxwoods. The Southern bird oil is an original from Chic Chateau.

Curtains are from Pottery Barn and woven shades are from Lowe’s.
I hope you have enjoyed touring my dining room. Let me know what you think.
Happy Dining, y’all!

  1. Gorgeous room! I'm always interested in how people store the necessary items for a dining room, napkins, flatware, serving pieces. So glad you said you would show us what is in the cabinet.
