Mardi Gras Jester Glassware {2013}

Back to happy Mardi Gras posts…

On Saturday, J & I finally got out of the house to enjoy the beautiful weather. I have been cooped up inside for way too long. With my health issues as well as the nasty weather of last week, I was going stir crazy.

Our first stop was Sister’s Antiques located in Old Metairie (more on Sister’s in a later blog). I am glad we stopped because I scored 2 double old fashioneds and 3 rocks jester harlequin glasses (Mardi Gras pattern) by Culver. These are perfect for Mardi Gras cocktails and, in my case, mocktails.

Culver glassware was founded back in 1939 and was made popular in the 1950s and 60s. The gold used in each piece is 22 kt and has been fired for permanence.

The Mardi Gras pattern depicts festively-costumed jesters in 22 kt gold. The glasses feature colorful studs.

From research on the internet I have been able to conclude that there were three “Mardi Gras” patterns manufactured by the company over the years. The first was made with a flat-gold pattern with raised, glass jewel-studs. An intermediate, second pattern incorporated the glass studs with a raised-gold pattern – it is the rarest of the three. The third pattern produced by 1980 had the raised gold and painted jewels, rather than the glass studs.

I love the vintage nature of each glass.

Even though I cannot partake in an alcoholic cocktail at the moment, I know that these glasses by Culver will be a staple for many cocktails in the future. They certainly are a classic and festive way to say “cheers”!

Cheers with my “mocktail”, ginger ale and fresh lime juice!

  2. I love these and I am going to keep my eye out for some for myself. What would be a good price if I find them? Also, so funny you mention the ginger ale drink. I am taking some medicine and can't partake either. Out with friends at dinner Friday night, I ordered a ginger ale on the rocks in the biggest wine glass they had! With a twist of lime! Great minds, I guess.

  4. Ron, Mama and Daddy had a large collection of these glasses and Sammy and I have inherited a set of 8 of the double old-fashioneds with stones. I love them and was so happy to read about them on your blog today. Had no idea of the history. A toast to you and to Carnival!

  7. Really, really nice!! I recently had to downsize and gave up my cocktail shakers and glasses from the 40's. I do miss them --- they had such eye appeal and were definitely conversation starters. Glad to hear you managed to get out --- one of the great pastimes in this world is antique shopping!!

  9. What an appropriate and timely find, Ron! I bet that if there had been more of these, you would have purchased the whole lot. :) Anyway, I'm glad you and J got to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather this past weekend and am praying that you can enjoy a cocktail really soon in one of those beautiful glasses! Cheers! <3
