Fall: Coleus in the Garden

 Come end of August, my sunpatiens are long and leggy, so after pulling them up, I love to plant coleus in the garden. The colors of coleus lend to the seasonal hues of Fall.

My go-to plant nursery: Perino's

Coleus comes in an array of foliage colors, including red, pink, orange, yellow, chartreuse, green, burgundy and purple. Leaves 1-6” long can be pointed, oval or scalloped, many with intricate veining or patterns. Coleus flower in late summer, with blue flower spikes that are often trimmed off for a neater appearance. Though most are bush types, there are trailing varieties as well.

Tolerant of sun, shade and heat, coleus is a quick grower that can be massed in the landscape, used as a filler element in a container, or allowed to cascade in a hanging basket or window box. With hundreds of different varieties to choose from, there’s a coleus to suit any garden style or color scheme.

In the Garden {Coleus}

 I love planting coleus plants in the period between August and November. The colors work so well with the warmer colors of Fall. Now, if only we could experience some cooler weather. Here is my front garden today:

It looks like Hurricane Sally has continued to move east towards the border of Mississippi and Alabama. Though I do not wish the hurricane on anyone, I am happy south Louisiana was spared once again.

Prayers for those affected by Sally.

Coleus from the Garden

 I recently cut some coleus branches from the garden because the plants were getting so big. I decided to place them in a couple vases around the house. Each arrangement of coleus leaves has lasted for over a week. They look just as good as the day they were cut. Who knew?

School for me starts tomorrow after a 5 month hiatus. I'm certain that it will take a while for the routine to set in. Let's just hope everyone stays healthy.

Coleus in the backyard

I also added coleus plants in the back garden. Boxwoods line the patio, so I planted coleus plant right behind them. They are doing so well. I also added the plants in a couple pots near the seating area. I am certainly loving the colors of the coleus plants at this time of year. Now, if only the weather would cooperate and get cooler. I'm not sure if I can deal with this 90+ degree temperature much longer.

Late Summer/ Early Fall Garden {Coleus Plants}

My begonias were looking quite leggy, so out they went. In their place went several coleus plants surrounding by white vincas. The color of the coleus plants will be perfect for the months of October and November. They will then be replaced by white pansies, a favorite of mine in the winter months.

Scientific namePlectranthus scutellarioides

The coleus plants are looking great in the front garden.
