Hammond America.....From Steaks to Science

On Friday, J & I headed to Hammond America (that’s Hammond, as in across the lake) as it is affectionally referred to by BFF MAC. My school’s Science Olympiad team participated in the State Science Olympiad hosted yearly at Southeastern Louisiana University.
We are very fortunate that friends of ours live so close to the university in downtown Hammond. Since the Olympiad starts at 7:30 a.m., it is really a pleasure to be able to crash at BFFs MAC and MA’s charming Hammond home. Our hosts are always welcoming.

On Friday evening, we were treated to a relatively new restaurant in the downtown Hammond area, The Steakhouse. The restaurant was a hit. From the charbroiled oysters, crab cakes, filets topped with crabmeat, and macaroni & cheese, the food tasted delicious. I am so happy that BFF MAC suggested this new eatery. I especially appreciated being able to order my steak by the ounce- great concept. We even were introduced to the nice owners. I am certain that The Steakhouse will be a Hammond staple for a while to come.

Cheers!

On Saturday, the Science Olympiad team participated in the State Olympiad. From 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., my day was full of bottle rockets, catapults, food science, towers, anatomy, and more. I am happy to report that St. Paul’s placed in the top 3 in 5 of our events. Kudos team!

French Quarter Fest Saturday (my Day 2)

More fun, food, drinks, friends, sunshine, and huge crowds greeted us on our Day 2 of French Quarter Fest.

We began our day at BFF Gary's house for pool time and grilled burgers. Check!

We headed down to the Quarter afterwards where we parked ourselves in a great spot in Jackson Square. The palms helped to shade us from the full effect of the sun. Thanks to the White's of Buckhead, Georgia for securing our "property. Drinks, drinks, drinks, food, and conversation passed the hours of a great afternoon.

We then dined at EAT restaurant. It is owned by none other than fellow Cardinal Jared Zeringue who hails from Vacherie, LA. As usual this French Quarter staple shined. The food was amazing.

We ended our Day 2 with a great fireworks show at the river.

Yes! I am tired (and so is Taunte Gary), but I have to go and fix brunch for 20 guests coming over shortly.

Happy French Quarter Fest, y'all!

Ocean Springs.....Eats & Drinks

Why is it that I am always wondering where to eat and where to drink? Human nature? I guess. Ocean Springs has a number of charming restaurants and bars all located conveniently within walking distance downtown.

After some research by J, here are our choices:
Breakfast
Bayview Gourmet

Located on Robinson Street, the Bayview Gourmet menu includes over 20 benedicts, omelets, wraps, gourmet sandwiches, seafood items, salads, homemade soups, and specialty coffees.  I enjoyed the basic breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, grits, and a biscuit. J. dined on an omelet of spinach, cheese, tomatoes, and bacon. Great food. Great service. Cute atmosphere.

Lunch
LuLu’s Corner Cafe

Located on DeSoto Street, the LuLu's menu includes great homemade sandwiches and salads. I had the delicious E.V.: ham and pimento cheesesandwich grilled to perfection. J had the Hoot: grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, & tomato sandwich. Housed in a charming bungalow, I cannot wait to return to LuLu’s.

Happy Hour
The Office

Located on the corner of Washington and Government Streets in a stylishly renovated building, The Office is an upscale pub. Make mine a bloody mary, please!

Dinner
Manhattan Grill

Located on Washington Avenue, Manhattan Grill is a cozy, quaint, and upscale steak and seafood restaurant. Starting in the cozy martini bar, J & I had a round of martinis. The bartender was very friendly and welcoming. Great conversation! From the delicious lightly fried calamari to the fried shrimp over fried green tomatoes, the menu choices were innovative and tasty. J dined on one of the night’s specials-redfish over grit cakes. J & I were happy we stumbled upon this fine dining establish. The service and food selections were outstanding as was the ambience.

Happy Dining Ocean Springs-style, y’all!
