I am not really sure what the room is actually called, but J & I refer to the room as a faux foyer though it exists beyond the parlor. Others have referred to it as a hallway or landing and the residents prior to us used the area as an office. To me, it is an excellent space for an entry table as you head to the second floor or to the rear of the home entering the dining room, kitchen, breakfast room, or den. * Since my post of this room, I have found out it is called a Stair Parlor or Stair Foyer. * I say potato. You say po tah toe.
The “room” features a central table I picked up from an Atlanta antique market called Antiques & Beyond . It is a vintage French clock set upon a draftsman table base. It is one of my favorite pieces in my home. It was purchased right before J & I moved back to New Orleans picked especially for this spot. On the table is a central vase usually filled with seasonal blooms. My favorite blooms of Casablanca lilies and white hydrangeas fill the vase throughout summer.
The table features some of my vast collection of coffee table books which serve as risers for my collection of boxes and an oyster shell votive holder. Vintage magnifying glasses also find a special place on the round table.
Over the table is a crystal filled chandelier purchased from local vendor, Armstrong Lighting. I just love how the crystals cause the light to dance around the room.
On the right hand wall, there is a large Audubon reproduction print of the Louisiana Blue Heron purchased from a dealer at Scott’s Market in Atlanta. Surrounding the Audubon print are two stone sconces from Chic Chateau. Over each sconce is a wall carriage-style lantern. For parties I really like to use candles in these, but year-round I place a seasonal curiosity.
Atop the print is a collection of small abalone shell mirrors purchased from Hazelnut New Orleans and from RSH catalog months ago. I love how the mirrors enhance my coastal Southern style.
The door on the back wall leads to the small powder room tucked discreetly under the stairs.
On the back wall are two botanical crustacean prints from Chic Chateau over an antique chair covered in Hazelnut's New Orleans toile.
To the left side of the room, the stairs lead to the second floor. There is a small Ballard Designs cabinet, a print of the Mercer House in Savannah from artist Vicci Waits, owner of the Raffine Galerie in Historic Savannah, two lamps from Hill Street Warehouse, vintage books, a silver bowl filled with lettered & numbered balls at the base of the staircase.
Two coastal bird oils from Chic Chateau complete the “foyer” area.
The numbers on the stairs were purchased from Elephannie on Etsy and are actually decals-easy to put on & easy to take off. Thanks to my BFF over at Dixie Delights for the excellent idea. At the base of the stairs there is a saying, “Attention a la marche”, a warning for guests to watch their step. I like all things French.
