Weekend Complete! {Saturday}

Walking. Shopping. Cocktailing. Dining. This past weekend was a good one.

On Saturday, J & I took our long walk (exercise) through Uptown down St. Charles Avenue to Audubon Park and back.

We then dined at a favorite Uptown establishment, Frankie & Johnny’s. Frankie & Johnny’s epitomizes New Orleans neighborhood eating and drinking. The menu features New Orleans style po-boys, muffalettas, spaghetti, fried pepper rings, and much, much more. I love the fried pepper rings. I also long for their hamburger on a bun. It is always so good and dressed to perfection.

After lunch, J and I ran a few errands and stopped in a few Magazine shops. I took J to The Shops at 2011 Magazine and then stepped foot into Vernon, a fairly new men’s and women’s clothing and accessories boutique. The moment we walked in, we were in awe. I love warm, sophisticated spaces, and this space felt like a true gentleman’s experience. Upon entering, I was drawn to a huge framed photograph on the rear wall. It looked so familiar. After asking the sales woman a few questions, I found out that the photograph is none other than the late-Vernon Galliano, former president of Nicholls State University, my alma mater in good ole Thibodaux, LA. His son Chris is the owner of this upscale shop, and it is named for his grandfather. I will definitely have to go back and take a few pics (I did not bring my camera.). Vernon is located on Magazine Street in the Lower Garden District.

All pics of Vernon are borrowed from www.iheartnola.com.

From Vernon’s own website:

“Vernon has preserved the exterior aesthetics of its turn-of-the-century building while crafting an interior that’s as modern, stylish, cosmopolitan, and comfortable as the clothing it carries. In Vernon’s technology-infused interior you can stay “plugged-in” and sip an espresso while consulting with a knowledgeable, experienced wardrobe stylist about which of our design-driven selections will provide you with just the right fashion upgrade.

Vernon founder Chris Galliano and Creative Director Laura Keith have taken a very progressive approach to Southern style. Bringing together emerging American talent, established designers from here and abroad, and specialty items created by Louisiana artisans, Chris and Laura have filled their space with clothing and jewelry that style conscious New Orleans’ professionals will find both attractive and accessible.”

J & I rested and watched the Olympics most of the afternoon before cabbing it to French 75 bar at Arnaud’s in the French Quarter. It is a great pre or post locale to drink and nosh. Charming and warm, the bar is always filled with a well coiffed crowd. The bartenders could not be more accommodating. We sipped our beverages and were treated to the amazing soufflé potatoes. Yum!

From the website:

“The French 75 was originally a “gentlemen only area,” during the days of the Cazenave family.

When the Casbarians renovated Arnaud’s in early 1979 a need was felt for an additional bar.  When Arnaud’s was reopened to the public in March 1979, the space debuted as The Grill Bar.

The bar and bar back are vintage.   The bar was custom-built in the late 1800s for a Gulf Coast restaurant and purchased from a local antique dealer.

In 2003, the bar was reincarnated as the French 75 bar with emphasis on premium spirits and fine cigars.”

The night ended with a late dinner at The Pelican Club. The Pelican Club specializes in a menu of Creole and local cuisine. Love the bar. Food was delicious. Atmosphere was nice. Service and substitution “rules” were annoying. Overall, it was fine. I would have also preferred being seated in a darker room. The lights in our dining area needed to be dimmer.

had every intention of going listen to jazz at the Ritz, but we were way too tired. So, we safely cabbed it back home.

All in all, it was another great Saturday in New Orleans.

Loving the weekend, y’all!

  1. Sounds like an amazing weekend! Love The Pelican Club--their bar is absolutely gorgeous, and the food is incredible. The Pelican Club is one of the few restaurants that Tom Fitzmorris has given a 5-star rating--that's quite an accomplishment. Tom doesn't give those stars up easily! :) I have to say that you and J truly know how to enjoy what NOLA has to offer. Enjoyed the post! Have a great day! :)

  2. Funny, I never knew there were so many Gingers around till I started blogging!
Seems you two have a wondrous New Orleans weekend. You could do tours of your Saturday itinerary and be booked for months. I haven't been down your way is a while. You make me want to hurry back.
