Favorite Main Dish {Shrimp & Grits}

My all-time favorite main dish is shrimp & grits. It does not get any better than thick grits and fresh, peeled shrimp.

J & I have used this shrimp & grits recipe found in Southern Living magazine a while ago.

The classic combo is a favorite recipe of the Southern states, and it is a fave of mine too.

I am again linking to Kelly’s Korner blog where Favorite Main Dishes will be shared. Come on over!

Garlic Shrimp & Grits

makes 4 servings

prep: 20 minutes

cook: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. unpeeled, medium-size fresh shrimp, cooked
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup quick-cooking grits, uncooked
  • 1 cup (4 oz.) shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Garnishes: chopped fresh chives, peeled and cooked shrimp, freshly ground black pepper

Peel shrimp, and devein, if desired.

Bring 3 cups of water, cream, butter, and salt to a boil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium, and whisk in grits. Cook, whisking constantly, 7 to 8 minutes or until mixture is smooth. Stir in 1 lb. shrimp, cheese, and garlic, and cook 1 to 2 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Garnish, if desired.

This recipe was submitted to Southern Living by Irene Smith of Covington, GA.

I am also a huge fan of the shrimp & grits offerings at Upperline Restaurant (Uptown) & Mr. B’s Bistro (French Quarter). I always get this fave dish at these local eateries.

Another of my favorite main dishes has always been a good hamburger. I certainly have to share my favorite one in the entire city. The honor goes to the LPG cheeseburger at La Petite Grocery (Uptown). A fresh burger with gruyere cheese and local greens is a must-try. Mouth-watering. Yummy.

I LOVE hamburgers. I prefer a thinner burger than a thicker one.

What are your favorite main dishes?

Don’t forget to comment on my Deen Team (Yes, Paula Deen) “audition”. Thanks.

Shrimp & Grits, y’all!

  1. I so LOVE shrimp and grits--I've never been to Upperline, but I have had Mr. B's shrimp and grits--delish! I have to agree with you on the best hamburger in the city--LPG is the bomb! Sure could eat both of those right now and those truffle fries with the house-made ketchup! Have a great day! :)

  3. Oh- MyHero would love this...however, we would have to split the dish- I don't eat shrimp and he won't eat grits(idiot). Sounds wonderful, Ron. You can't get grits here AT ALL! Sad, huh?
I hope you have a wonderful weekend-xo Diana

  7. Turkey burger with tomato jam, arugula, and a little feta at Company Burger, with sweet potato fries! Dante's Kitchen has pretty good shrimp and grits, too.

  11. Oh my goodness! You and I have the same taste buds it seems. I love shrimp and grits (anything with grits for that matter) and adore a good burger and fries. Looks like you have some great eateries around you to choose from. Those dishes look amazing. I may have to try your shrimp and grits recipe from Southern Living. It doesn't look too difficult.
