Giant Leopard Plant

Along my Uptown walks, I have noticed these "water lily"- looking plants growing in yards. Though they appear to be a "water lily", they are used along fences and around the bases of trees. The large, shiny green leaf caught my attention, and when it was time to freshen up the area around my front yard sugar kettle I was able to locate the plants at The Plant Gallery.

Farfugium japonicum 'Gigantea' (Giant Leopard Plant) - This interesting herbaceous perennial holds broad, rounded shiny green leaves that are 5 to 18 inches across and rise up from the ground individually on 3 to 4 foot stalks. In late summer through fall, yellow daisy-like flowers bloom on tall branched flower stems. They will grow in sun or shade, but do best in part shade and require it inland unless ample water is provided. Water regularly. This plant lends a tropical look to any garden. The correct name for the species is now considered to be a Farfugium japonicum.

I think they look great around the sugar kettle. Since it is my first attempt at growing this species, I will judge the ease of growing it and report back to you after our hot summer. For now, I do love the look.

Leopard Plant, y'all!

  5. The plant is so pretty...nice color and texture...however, I don't think it would survive an Indiana winter. Enjoy your summer!

  6. Gorgeous pictures... did you notice the fairy in picture three!? Sittig with her hands on her knees and feet dangling in the water. I guess she will watch over you this summer. I will call her Miss Water (fountain) Lilly. I thought maybe you had photo shopped her in. Have a great summer!
