Saving the Coast: One Seedling at a Time

Last Thursday and Friday, I ventured down to Grand Isle with a group of 17- 6th graders to plant bitter panicum that we have been growing in our garden all year long.

Bitter panicum is a beach grass that is valuable to protecting our sandy coastline. As a science educator, it does make me feel very good to witness my students take such an active role in protecting our coastline.

What a great experience for the students!

Saving Our Coast...

one seedling at a time!

Last Thursday, I traveled with the 6th grade Earth Science class to Grand Isle, Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island, to plant bitter panicum.

Our school's 6th graders have been growing and raising bitter panicum in our school's garden all year long. Bitter panicum is a fast growing beach grass plant that helps in hindering beach erosion. Read more about bitter panicum: HERE.

After planting, the students toured the Coast Guard station on the island and learned about the responsibilities of our Coast Guard members.

Of course, there was some play time too.

It is a great thing to witness our youth learning and taking care of our coastline.

Bitter Panicum, y'all!
