Ma Maison…the Powder Room

Are you ready to see another room of the house? the smallest room?

Discreetly tucked under the stairs off the stair parlor, the teensy tiny powder room is an excellent use of often unused space. This room is so hard to photograph due to its small size. The light is often poor, and it is hard to “squeeze” in such a small space to get adequate pics. I tried my best. This is the last room of my downstairs tour.

The wallcovering was here when we moved in here in 2008. I kept it because the turquoise in the paper has really been in vogue for the past few years. The walls and ceiling are covered entirely in this tropical palm frond Bruschwig & Fils wallpaper. For tiny spaces like this, I am a true believer that the entire space including the ceiling should be covered. The colors of the wallcovering which includes ample doses of turquoise goes well with my Oysteria plate collection.

A cane-print fabric serves as the sink skirt to hide the unsightly plumbing of the miniscule corner sink.

Beach hand soap by Nest fragrances rests towards the rear of the sink.

Beside the sink is an old candle holder turned into a stand topped with vintage books and paper tea towels. Tea towels are by Caspari available through Chic Chateau.

On the right side wall is a hand blown, tortoise style glass pendant shade on a basic silver light fixture. The simple fixture is surrounded by my favorite mollusk, actual oyster shells. Take a look at how the shells are attached. They are not glued directly to the fixture. Instead, I glued strong magnets to the back of the oyster shell and since the light fixture is metal…voila! What an easy fix! The shells make a great statement and lend to my laid back Southern coastal style.

The towel ring is covered in garden twine and features an oak tree tea towel by Anali. Towards the ceiling is a framed bird print picked up recently at Steinmart.

The main wall features one of my favorite and first bird oils, a white heron in a Southern marsh from Chic Chateau. Surrounding the framed oil are two sconces and Oysteria oyster plates.

On the floor is a small hide rug from kenla (of Thibodaux-out of business). I love to use decorative rugs instead of true bath mats.  The cane-inspired trash cane is a Ballard Design Outlet find. I used to stop at the outlet weekly when I lived in Atlanta. Fun finds!

On the back of the commode is an Abigail’s oyster dish filled with an Agraria candle, Claire Burke spray, and shell orbs.

The framed postcard above the commode is by Martin Welch. The oval bird print is from Chic Chateau and looks vintage though it is brand new.

Though small, the powder room is used a lot and by many.

I hope you enjoyed this tiny tour. Stay tuned. Next week, I’ll feature my back courtyard before moving upstairs.

  7. Ron, I love all the design ideas in your powder room. Love the shells and bird pictures, of course.
Thanks for sharing your space and now I'm inspired to do something with our under-the-stairs powder room. Just can't decide what color to paint the cabinet. Actually, I'd like to rip it out and get a new one. LOL
