Over the Top or Underneath…{Poll}

I saw this posted on facebook recently, so I thought it might be fun to poll my blog followers/readers.

A {underneath}

or

B {over the top}?

Let me know which direction you favor by commenting below.

I am such an OCD type that if I am in someone’s home and it’s not in my favored direction then I have a tendency to change it so that the toilet paper comes over the top. I am guilty!

Read this that I found on Current Configuration. I love science, so it is quite interesting.

Put simply, there is a right way to hang the toilet paper, and a wrong way. Read on to determine the status of your own roll.

Toilet paper has a natural curve, a way of being that lends itself to certain orientations on the toilet paper spool.* If handled with skill and knowledge, it can provide an abundance of both sanitation and comfort, quilted together in each square of pillowy ply. If handled with clumsy ignorance, or worse, carelessness, it will beset the user with pain, filth, and frustration. Don’t let it end this way, with you curled on the tile floor of the stall, weeping in frustration, covered in wasted papier de toilette. To convince you, we’ve created some diagrams, harnessing the power of SCIENCE, to demonstrate the natural benefits of the over hanging method. First, we examine the optimal viewing benefits of the over hanging method.

Below are examples of the helpful and fruitful over-hung method on the left and the annoying and detrimental under-hung method on the right.

Right vs. Wrong

Free Sheetage Viewing diagram

Notice the dramatic difference in the amount of visible toilet paper. Ironically, it is the over-hung toilet paper that has both the most visible free sheetage and the least amount of sheetage free from the roll to do it. Now, this may not seem like a big deal on its own, but in these extra sheets lies your undoing. Observe.

Paper Positioning diagram

We here at Current Configuration, for the purposes of ease and expediency, do the one-handed tear (okay, really, it’s just me, but bear with me, er, us). The one-handed tear is a quick maneuver that takes advantage of the perforated squares, allowing your bundle of toilet paper to be liberated with one quick swipe of the arm. This is the foundation of bathroom ease, the cottony bedrock on which enjoyment rests in the restrooms of many nations.

Mechanics of the One-Handed Tear diagram

The one-handed tear relies on a quick and forceful motion directed either away from or towards the tear-er. The forces applied in this motion are great and, like the atom, are not to be trifled with. The natural curve of the over-hung method allows the roll to stand fast after a one-handed tear, but the under-hung method creates a calamitous tendency in the roll. This tendency can only lead to this:

End Result diagram

Wasted paper, frustration, the destruction of our forests. While we realize that it is possible to execute a one-handed tear on an under-hung roll, this is a game of sanitary Russian roulette. You are bound to lose eventually, and there is no re-rolling an unwound toilet paper roll. The results will only cause you grief. Don’t let this happen to you. Restroom attendants, janitors, maids, facilities crews, and responsible toiletowners take note: Don’t use the under-hung method for your toilet paper rolls. It leads to the destruction of our precious resources and the pillars of civilization as we know it!

*Does that thing have a proper name?

Interesting, huh?

TP, y’all!

  2. OMG, this is the most random post you have ever done, Ron! Personally, I'm an "underneath" kind of girl, but the hubby is an "over the top" person. Therefore, we have an unspoken "battle" going on at the house with the toilet paper and paper towel. If I change it, he will change it when he uses the bathroom and vice-versa with me! Have a great day! xoxo

  3. Absolutely over the top! My husband always puts it the "wrong" way and I have to change it every single time! It drives me crazy!

  6. I love this post. I FIGHT with my hubby about this all the time.

  7. LOL.... I'm with you "B" is the proper way! That was funny to read, and ever so true. I've turned a roll around at someone's home too (my bad)! I take the lead from the TP manufacturers too... if one bothers to notice the subtle design on the paper they will notice if they do it like "A" it will be upside down! Even the hotels do it that way!

  8. I am an over the top girl...however as long as the new roll makes it on the holder I really don't care which was it goes! LOL

  9. I am an Over The Top kinda gal....and I change it in people's bathrooms, too.......shhhhhhh......Hubby is an UNDER the roll kinda guy but because he would never lower himself to putting a roll on the holder I don't have to worry about it....and there you have it! xo Diana ps. I am a little OCD myself......

  11. Fun post, Ron! B ~ Over! Only way to go, IMHO. I'm guilty of changing them too if someone has it under. Guess we're both OCD ~ :)

  13. Great post! I am over the top...Strange how we have our ideas on what bugs us.
I have been known to change it too....I wonder if they notice....if so, maybe they may prefer it that way in the future.
We are educating them. I also want toilet seats down and the door wide open, when not occupied.

  14. over, but I don't overly mind under,

  15. Ron, I think I must be the president of the OCD club, because not only do I ALWAYS have the bath tissue OVER the top, I also make the first tissue in a "V".

  16. OMG Ron you are so much fun! I am with you, I prefer B over. I too want to change when others have it going under but I don't. My mother in-law stayed with us for a week and she kept changing my toilet paper to under. I would go and change it back. It was lthela biggest butting of heads and the funny thing it I love her and we get along great...except with toilet paper. I remember telling my husband two days in to the week and he just stared at me with that look. You know, that look people give you like you are crazy?! He wanted to bring it up to her but I wouldn't let him...silly to ruin our friendship. To this day, I haven't said anything. I wonder what my MIL thought changing it to her way to find out it was changed each time she used the bathroom.
Loved your post. It made my day!
(Hope this wasn't a double comment from me...I have problems commenting from my iPhone lately.)

  17. Oh how funny! I'm a bit OCD on this one too. It must be over the top. I never knew there was a scientific study done on this. Lol!

  18. I'm with Choice B, but never knew exactly why. :-)

  19. Maybe because I'm lefthanded......I say UNDER!!!

  20. Okay, once I got past title of this post (yes, my mind wandered there)...definitely OVER. Tears easier, less waste, personally think it looks better. And, we are a house of 3 lefties...OVER is easier for us (sorry Nancy). Of course, all of our TP holders are to the left of our toilets as well! LOL Uh oh...now you may have to think about that one!! LOL

  21. Ok, totally meant to add...when have you ever stayed at the Ritz and the TP is under??? ( Hubby's 2 cents) Yes, I too fold mine for when guests are coming! Yes, I am over the top!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, the over the top because of the folding thingy that they do in hotels! That ensures cleanliness right!? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hahaha... You have me laughing over here Ron Definitely B. NO other way... as you showed A equals problems. I am so anal ( pun intended)... glad to know I am not the only one who has to have it a certain way!

  24. When will people ever realize it MUST be over? And for the love of all that is good and holy, it is one's responsibility and duty to change it to the proper hanging less people begin to think under is the correct way! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ha! Well, it's B, of course, or the hotels couldn't fold the little pointy at the end. :) This is cute. Thanks for popping in and hope your week is going well.
    be a sweetie,
    Shelia;)

  26. This is the biggest "thing" you and I have ever had in common!!! IT'S OVER THE TOP, PEOPLE!!!
I too, have "helped" my pitiful friends reconfigure their TP if it isn't arranged over the top. It's the least I can do.
I also heard once that back in the day when TP had decorative patterns, that you would never put these on the bottom, it HAD to be over the top.
I feel much better that you've enlightened the world with this info.
Mankind thanks you, and so do I.

  27. My husband and I just argued about this! I prefer under and he prefers over!

    ReplyDelete
  28. This is too funny - I grew up with toilet paper the wrong way LMHO - I've since learned the error of my ways and do it the right way BUT I can't tell you how many people comment and tell me it's on backwards lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. AND I only discovered it through travelling - which is even funnier - because hotels do it the right way - so now you see how travel really does broaden your horizon LOL

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well.....if I'm being totally honest.....as long as it makes it on the holder I am happy. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am such a rebel. Under.

LOL! My cats like to play with it and only know how to roll it toward themselves. If I place it over then I am left to navigate paper streamers out into the hallway.

  32. I'm an over the top girl myself...drives me nuts if it's not put on that way!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Over the top....that's the only way! I, too, have been known to change the direction of the roll at a party...hehe! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's not just you, Ron!! LOL!!! I prefer OVER, as well! Drives me crazy any other way! And I have to have the folded point on the first sheet...just like the hotels! Our guests always comment on my "attention to detail"! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Wow too funny! I just assumed in the past when people had the TP going under that they were lazy/distracted/etc when they changed it. I always switch it to over!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. YAY…I prefer right…but sometimes if its the other way I don't really care to change it. Great post!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I do have to say, I am completely the opposite when it comes to wasting paper UNDER...I always end up pulling off more OVER, and I find I have to change rolls less frequently and use less paper when I put the roll UNDER. So for me, this is just backwards! But fun!
