Eating in the French Quarter {Petite Amelie}

For months, J has been telling me about this great spot for lunch in the Quarter. J usually dines there on Fridays with co-workers or clients.

I was fortunate last Saturday to finally get the chance to experience this charming spot.

Petite Amelie is the newest extension to Cafe Amelie, located just steps away on the corner of Royal and Dumaine Streets.

Petite Amelie specializes in what they call “cuisine rapide” consisting of salads, sandwiches, breakfast bites, cheeses, and pasteries. There is also a selection of homemade desserts.

Petite Amelie offers indoor seating or a great place to order take-out.

The chef says it best:

“Petite Amelie is the logical expansion of Cafe Amelie which we conceived as a place geared toward the people who live and work in the French Quarter,” says Chef Jerry Mixon. “Since we live and work in the area, we asked ourselves what we would love to have here.  Top of the list, a high quality, take-away Specialty Food Shop.  A Juice Bar!  House-baked cakes and desserts, prepared entrees and sides that people could pick up on their way to/from work. Petite Amelie is for those who don’t feel like cooking but would still like to dine well at home.  In an effort to assist our neighbors who never want to leave the Quarter, we wanted to offer fresh baguettes, good cheeses, pate, and specialty items suitable for an impromptu cocktail party & entertaining.  And of course, for all the hard working people in the French Quarter, we wanted to have great lunch options of soups, classic salads, sandwiches with great locally-sourced bread, and fresh iced teas, lemonades etc.  Our motto is, Everything fresh, everything special. Everything Cuisine Rapide.”

The interior is oh-so charming.

On my recent visit to Petite Amelie, I had the Tuba Cubano croque {pork, ham, swiss, poblano pepper, pickle} with a side of potato salad. For those of you who do not know, a croque is a hot pressed sandwich. It was flavorful and delicious.

J devoured the Gruyere & Tomato croque with bacon. Scrumptious!

And I could not leave without 6, yes 6 homemade ginger snap cookies. Ginger snaps are one of my favorite cookies, and these are terrific. Perfection!

A dozen salted caramel treats also left with me.

Please add this perfect lunch spot to your list when in the French Quarter.

I cannot wait to go back.

  1. Good morning, Ron! I'm so happy that you are feeling well enough to blog. I'm definitely putting Petite Amelie on my Pinterest restaurant boards. I've been having Cafe Amelie on it but have not yet made it there. Now, that the weather is getting cooler--I want to dine in the courtyard--and our condo will be ours next month, I will definitely have to try both! Congratulations on being a part of the Autumn Blog Hop--will be looking forward to reading yours. :) Take care of yourself and rest up! Have a great day! xoxo

  9. Mmmm, both sandwiches look delicious, Ron, as does that salad. I don't normally think salads look delicious but they must make a good one there!

  13. What a fabulous spot. Will definitely keep this on the list of places to eat when visiting. Ginger snap cookies are my favorite and I have actually found a couple good gluten free varieties.
