Vintage Find {Double Pan Scale}

I was so happy to find a vintage double-pan scale at a local Magazine Street shop recently. I stared at it for about six months, and it finally became mine a few weeks ago.

The scale itself is cast iron and features two original brass pans.

I knew that the moment I carried it home that it would be a perfect compliment to the parlor mantle.

I am having a ball accessorizing the pans with glass orbs, minerals, pottery, clams, and even flowers.

As a science educator, I have an affinity for vintage measuring devices.

Now, I need your ideas. How would you accessorize the brass pans of the scale? Any ideas are appreciated. I prefer found objects, but any ideas are “good” ideas.

Vintage scale, y’all!

  1. That's quite a handsome find, Ron. I really like how it's styled (in the shop display? with the nest) - I've done that with one of my own, and have flower frogs and found Native American flint pieces on the opposite pan. I also like your orbs with lavender/flowerpot on the opposite side. I have another antique scale in my husband's office (a gift I bought him) that has various coins on each pan which were given to him by his uncle while traveling in the service during Vietnam era. I can see seasonal changes in styling - deer sheds, pinecones, seashells & coral, mercury orbs, books - the possibilities are endless - have fun!

  3. Ron, I love your newest vintage scale. I love how you styled it with the lavender, orbs, and flowers. I love a bird's nest for spring. I know you will style it beautifully. I love reading your blog. Mary Lu, Dayton, OH

  5. Great find, Ron! I love the bunnies too. As for the scale decoration, how about a vintage alarm clock, a small old globe, a vintage toy car, a collection of small old bottles or a glass jar filled with seed pods (or other nature finds)?
    Have a happy weekend!

  7. Good morning, Ron! What a great find! I can't believe it took you six months to "make it yours"! You are lucky that someone else didn't snatch it up during the "staring" period. ;) I love what you have done with it so far--I only wish I had a smidgen of your sense of style. Have fun changing it up, which I know you will. I see an ever-changing vignette with this piece often! Have a great day! xoxo

  8. Well Ron, I think I would put paper doilies in the bottom, and put it on my coffee table with individually wrapped candies in both ends! But all the different ways that you've done it, is just perfect. Really love the nest in one end with a pair of birds in the other? Of my, soooo many options!!! Have fun!

  9. Great find and what strength to resist it for 6 months! Loved how you styled it and it's a beautiful peice. How about oyster shells? Cylinders filled with oysters.

  10. What a nice find! I love the glass paperweights you have on them and really like the idea of natural items too, especially the geodes. I'd definitely have a skull on it for Halloween, for other times, maybe a bee skep, cloche or bowl of sea glass. You're going to have fun trying out all the design possibilities. Have a fun weekend!

  11. That's a great looking scale. I love vintage scales too. You used it in the perfect place on your mantel too. I like the contrast of the brass and wood. You could add some preserved boxwood to it if you're looking for ideas of things to fill it.
