One Martini … Two Martini…

Three Martini … Floor!

Red_Martini_F

My favorite cocktail of choice these days is a simple one, a slightly dirty martini.

13

Shaken, not stirred. Vodka, not gin. Straight up.

14

I like my martini with Ketel One vodka and just a drop or three of olive juice garnished with a couple olives.

Simple. Classic. Delicious.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Living Southern

Upon reading Southern Living style, created & compiled by the editors of my favorite Southern Living magazine, I was inspired to show you how Southerners and myself define Southern style. Those of you that follow Uptown Acorn already know I totally adore Southern style and design. And thanks to BFF Debi for the lovely book.

In the coming weeks, inspired by Southern Living style, I want to show you how one defines Southern style and how I employ this is my own home.

10

What is Southern style?

Southern Living editors suggest that “the nuances can be hard to define, yet when you see a beautiful room, you know all the elements are there: The easygoing mix of formal and informal furnishings. A color scheme that soothes but never bores. Treasured art displayed in a casual way. Window treatments that waver somewhere between frilly and masculine. A pedigree rug, passed down through generations. A fine antique cozying up to a loosely slipcovered club chair. Taken together, the pieces add up to a graceful look that can only be known as Southern.” I could not agree more.

In coming weeks, check out my own take on the following:

  • color & patterns

15

  • fabrics

8

  • collections

11

  • monograms

1

  • wicker, rattan, cane, & bamboo

7

  • the hearth

5

  • luxe curtains

14

  • antiques

4

Live Southern everyday. I hope you join me in this journey of showing you, my followers & readers, how I incorporate my own Southern style throughout my home. I will also be inviting some of my blogger friends to show me (us) how he/she incorporates Southern style in their homes.

And a Happy Birthday to two BFFs, Michael & Richard! Cheers!

Hubig’s Pies {say it isn’t so}

Beignets. Chickory Coffee. Hubig’s pies. Iconic tastes of New Orleans!

Early yesterday morning, the “naturally n’awlins” Hubig’s Pie Factory building burned to the ground. Hubig’s Pies have been around for as long as I can remember. My Pappy used to pick these up for us from local convenient stores when he picked up his stash of cigars and probably a lil “juice”. LOL! Hubig’s Pies bring back great childhood memories.

A total loss (from WWLTV): Click here!

From the Hubig’s Pie website:

“Simon Hubig began his baking career at the tender age of six, learning from his mother. Fast forward 100 years and two New Orleans families have also made baking pies a family affair.
The Simon Hubig Pie Company was founded in Ft. Worth, TX at the start of World War I by master baker Hubig. One of several plants in his southeastern chain, the New Orleans bakery opened in 1922 in its current Bywater location.  Hubig's chain faltered during the Depression and in the end, only the New Orleans location survived. And survive they do today.
Located in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans just east of the historic French Quarter, the Simon Hubig Pie Company bakes all of their products daily, as in Hubig's original plant. Fresh, local ingredients are used. And "Savory Simon" is memorialized in the company logo.
Names and faces don't change too often at Hubig's. The Bowman and Ramsey families are in their second generations of owner and operators, with a third ready to take the helm.”

I was fascinated how facebook lit up this morning with many locals rushing and finding the last of the pies. Many stores sold out immediately upon opening. I have even seen many showing up for ridiculous prices on ebay.

My BFF Shannon found hers at a local convenient store…Score!

The good news is the the owners of the Hubig’s Pie Factory say that the factory will be back. I am personally so glad to hear that the Hubig’s Pie Factory will not end up like many iconic New Orleans business that “ain’t dere no mo” (K & B, Godchaux’s, D.H. Holmes, McKenzie’s, etc.}. Katrina flooded it. Fire burned it. Hubig’s Pies will be back.

My favorite is Sweet Potato. What is yours? Comment below!

Displaying Pictures {Chez Uptown Acorn}

Today, I am joining Kelly at Kelly’s Korner blog for her series Show Us Your Life- Show Us How You Display Pictures. I hope you will hop over to Kelly’s blog to see how others in blogland display art, pictures, and photos.

In my own home I take a symmetrical approach to organizing art and pictures. I am a firm believer that framed prints and art look much better when grouped together.

In the parlor, 8 framed crests sit atop the sofa. A large grouping of art like this makes a great statement piece.

In the breakfast room, framed menus from our local favorite Commander’s Palace are symmetrically hung and fill the entire back wall.

1

Along the staircase wall is a framed collection of New Orleans iconic drawings and artwork all framed in black wooden frames. I really like when groupings are framed in similar colored mats and frames.

In the master bedroom hangs a series of Audubon bird prints framed in stylish mirrored frames.

22

In a guest room (Honey’s {my mom}guest room) is a collection of oak leaf and acorn botanicals. The acorn is the French symbol of prosperity and has always been a fav of mine. Uptown Acorn, y’all!

8

Also in Honey’s guest room is a grouping of 4 framed botanicals- 2 on each side of the window seat.

11

10

In a guest bath are 4 framed photographs of New Orleans iconic fleur de lis art by BFF Shannon.

14

15

16

In another guest bedroom, The Nest, are 4 framed egg and bird prints.

12

13

Family photographs sit organized in silvery frames on end tables and shelves throughout the house.
