Throw Me Somethin' {Property}

Thanks to BFF Gary for setting up our property on Napoleon Avenue in preparation of the Mardi Gras festivities. This is how it looked on Wednesday morning. Loved that Gary did his own spin of a monogram.

After the rain of Wednesday night, here is how it looks on Thursday morning. WOW!

#buildthewall

No! No! I am not getting all political on you. I just thought this was funny when I spotted it on facebook this morning.

Rows and rows of ladders have become our wall down here in New Orleans. Let the good times roll!

For those of you not from here, folks decorate and use these ladders to hold their youngsters and to stand on to make the bead catching easier. The whole ladder thing has become such a controversial issue in the past few years as folks are marking their territory on public grounds, and placing the ladders so close together that others cannot pass.

Ladders are here to stay, y'all!

Throw Me Somethin' {Mardi Gras: First Weekend}

I always love the first weekend of Mardi Gras as it is much quieter and less hectic for us. From watching the parades with friends and neighbors to over drinking and overeating, the first weekend of parading ended with magnificent weather.

As the busy week approaches, I will be certain to get a couple nights of rest.

First Weekend. Check!

Eating New Orleans {Picnic Whiskey and Provisions}

J and I had read reviews that were all over the place about newish Uptown establishment Picnic Whiskey & Provisions by three seasoned restaurant gurus. After dining there last Sunday brunch, I too am all over the place. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either.

Let me start off by saying the space at State and Magazine Streets is precious. The decor is spot on and interesting.

Upon seating, we asked our waiter for two bloody Marys. In his exact words, "I'll see if we have the stuff to make those." What??? It's New Orleans, and it's a Sunday brunch. The waiter did come back to the table to tell us that the bartender would attempt to make them. Attempt??? OMGosh!!! He did say that bloody Marys are not normally on the menu (really???), but they would be serving some during the Mardi Gras season. 15 minutes later, J and I had our bloody Marys, and they were watered down and just gross. The waiter took them back, and they were remade. They were acceptable but nothing wonderful. I hope the bartenders will practice. Get a bottle of zing zang and some vodka....voila!!!

We started with the

BLACK SKILLET MELTED PIMENTO CHEESE

sidewalk roasted chilis, sea salt and Crystal hot sauce pulp
The pimento cheese was really good. It may be a tad spicy for those that cannot enjoy a spicy meal.

J dined on the

CRAWFISH BOIL HOT FRIED CHICKEN BASKET

heritage boneless light & dark meat with a warm cornbread cake biscuit and Crystal hot sauce pulp
It was just okay. I did enjoy some of the warm cornbread cake biscuit though.

I dined on the

CRAWFISH BOIL HOT FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH

double stacked light & dark meat, mirliton dill pickles, butter steamed sesame bun, lemony white miso mayo

Again, it was okay. There was waaaaaay too much of the mayo.

Overall, it was just okay. Will we be rushing back? Probably not!

A Guide to New Orleans {Alexa Pulitzer}

I love a great guide to New Orleans. One of the most comprehensive and useful guides I have seen is from stationary designer, Alexa Pulitzer.

Acorn Cottage Uptown {Backyard Furniture}

We have long term plans for the backyard which includes a lap pool as well as an arbor, but as we save funds we have slowly been replacing the backyard furniture which we have had since 2005. It moved with us from our Atlanta home to our Perrier home in 2010, and it was just sold to two families who will hopefully use it for a long time too.

I imagine a French-style garden, pool, and furniture.
Step #1 Chase's Landscapers added the vintage style cafe' lights. Check!

The addition of French-style bistro furniture including loveseats and chairs will add a touch of France to the garden. We chose these because of the exposed back yard. I hate having to bring cushions in and out. The bamboo frame is also outdoor friendly. Black and white cabana-striped pillows compliment the gray and white furniture. We also added an acrylic waterfall coffee table. One has to sit drinks, right?

The garden looks like this today. I'll update changes as they are made. We'd like to pull up some of the pavers and install dwarf mondo grass.

Personally, I like the look of an algaed patio. I love the greenish patina. I know it's not for everyone, but I like it.

Vintage Cafe' String Lights

Last week, Chase's Landscape gurus installed strings of vintage-style cafe' lights in the backyard. I cannot tell you how great these look at night. Connected to a dusk-dawn timer, these lights are easy to use and light up the area perfectly.

I'll share more of the backyard soon as our new furniture is being delivered soon.

Louisiana Creole Cottage

If I could have any home, I would love a raised Creole Cottage. I came across this beauty from the River Parishes while reading The New Orleans Advocate.

You can read about this beauty and see more pictures HERE.

Creole cottage is a term loosely used to refer to a type of vernacular architecture indigenous to the Gulf Coast of the United States. Within this building type comes a series of variations.
