All About the {Southern} Bird

I know. I know. The post could go in a number of directions, but I am referring to my love of Southern Coastal birds such as herons, cranes, and pelicans. On our recent jaunt to Ocean Springs, we stopped into Hillyer House, one of the loveliest shops on the coast.

I am such a fan of Southern artist Jean McKee that I rarely leave without adding one to my collection. For some reason, this one of an orange-haired heron really spoke to me. I love the colors used especially the pop of orange. The vertical shape is also different than the square-shaped ones I already own.

I added it to the top of the secretary in the parlor and rearranged the trophies I have up there. I am really digging the POP of orange.

When we visited in March, I picked up this darling bird oil also. I do not think that I ever managed to share it with you.

I placed this one on the wall along the lower landing of the staircase. A collection of curiosity-filled trophy cups sit on a demilune table.

J & I love to shop at Hillyer House when we are in Ocean Springs. It is a must-see destination if you are in the area. The staff could not be more friendlier.

Southern Bird {Rayne Housey}

Recently while in Judy at the Rink, I picked up another painting by the talented New Orleans artist Rayne Housey.

Her work on gold-leafed canvases are so pretty and classic with a modern edge.

My newest is a Southern bird. Ain't she a beaut? I added the newest painting to the mantle in the parlor.

For the Birds.....Southern Birds, that is!

As you know, I am in love with all things Southern as atested in my past blog post On Being Southern and my page My Southern Style. A number of followers and friends of my blog have noticed the vivid oil paintings in many of my home pictures and have asked me to feature these oils in a future blog. Well, today is your lucky day. Today, I feature the beautiful Southern bird oils hanging in various rooms of my home.

After my mom’s stroke in Fall of 2009, I was going back and forth from NOLA to Thibodaux on a weekly basis. BFF DTW of Chic Chateau asked me if I would be interested in doing some work to help the store out with a client or two. I jumped at the chance since I’d been spending many days and nights in Thibodaux. I fell in love with the array of bird oils available in the shoppe. Much of my paychecks went to purchasing these magnificent oils. I am in love with my vast collection.

The oils are all handpainted by various artists. Many are commissioned by Chic Chateau. They are all purchased from a Fine Art Co. that commissions artists to paint requested subject matter. Chic Chateau requests southern birds, landscapes, jazz, southern themes, etc. DTW has also sent photographs to be painted. A few years ago she also submitted a photo of Thibodaux’s own Saint Joseph Co-Cathedral and had several painted.

Chic Chateau "hand" picks many oils at trade shows or from detailed photographs.

I hope you enjoy these lovely Southern bird oils as much as J & I do.

Chic, C'est La Vie..... Chic Chateau

Ready for more of my Thibodaux shopping treats?

Opened in 2006 in the heart of Downtown Thibodaux, Chic Chateau offers charming home and decorating accents as well as design services. There is also an amazing supply of artwork which includes handpainted oils of my favorite Southern birds. The selection of oils is outstanding!

     Chic Chateau offers unique artwork, elegant lamps, custom floral arrangements(some are even by yours truly, The Acorn), accent furniture, jewelry, candles, and a plethora of fine gifts for the most discriminating tastes.
     Chic Chateau owners BFFs DTW & RDT travel to market in Dallas a couple times each year looking for the latest and greatest trends in the decor industry. The selection of Caspari cocktail and dinner napkins is a very popular one. The pillows are unique and oh-so stylish. And I might add that the collection of fine porcelain vases, containers, urns, soap dishes, and lamps are great accents for an elegant decor.
     I can never leave without picking up a special "treat" or two. On my recent visit, I picked up two sea-inspired pillows to add to the Southern coastal decor of my den and a set of dark purple crown Caspari cocktail napkins that I know will come in handy during the Mardi Gras season.
