During my shopping excursion with Amanda of Dixie Delights during Mardi Gras season, I purchased the most adorable hand-painted birds on stands from Hazelnut. I finally got around to photograph them in place. The birds are perfect for the spring season, so each landed on the antique desk in the living room. The birds are perfect with my ibis lamp, blue and white ginger jar, Baobab candle, and Audubon's Aviary coffee table book. The blue and white painted birds add to the whimsy of the spring season.

Throw Me Somethin' {Mardi Gras: Serving Pieces}

I fell in LOVE with these Mardi Gras themed serving pieces (and ornaments) available at a Thibodaux fave, Chic Chateau. I am a huge instagram shopper these days.

It is often hard to discover Mardi Gras items that are not totally tacky and gaudy, but this set of serveware is classic. I adore the neutral color and the gold rim. These staple pieces are easy to mix and match and add to an existing collection. All are reasonably priced under $100.

The Acorn Cottage {Before and After: Sunroom}

One of the rooms that we spend the most time in is the sunroom. Large windows lead to a view of the front garden and the passers-by on the street. It is our favorite room to sip a cocktail and visit with friends. Has Parlor Patter been replaced by Sunroom Sippin'? Only time will tell. The built-ins in this room are what "sold" me on the house. I cannot get enough of built-in shelving. Believe it or not, we used most of the furniture from our former home on Perrier- sofa, club chairs, bar cart, end table, round clock table.

I am loving the new sideboard piece that we purchased in May especially for the sunroom. We initially thought we may want a TV atop the piece but decided not to for now. The sideboard was purchased from DOP Antiques. The two green and white bistro chairs are also a new purchase from Frontgate. I have wanted a pair for a long time. The drapes were a splurge from Fairfax Fabric Company on Magazine Street. The overhead lighting and branch sconces are Visual Comfort from Rivers Spencer also on Magazine Street.

The Built-ins!!! Yes, I adore built-ins as they are so fun to decorate and constantly rearrange. I am so smitten with the shelves and the ample storage beneath.

The Southern bird oils gracing the grasscloth covered walls are from Chic Chateau Interiors in my hometown of Thibodaux. The pheasant painting is by by own niece Lucy Pearce (Ain't she talented?). The acorn and oak leaf art was purchased from The Plantation Shop way back in 2008, and the turtle shell plates atop the bar are by Vietri purchased from Hazelnut. I believe they are discontinued but are one of my favorite things.

The sunroom will be a great room to entertain and also a great room to relax.

To Chop or Not to Chop, that is the question?

I recently read one of my favorite designer’s feature in the current Southern Living magazine entitled, “How do I arrange the pillows on my sofa?” I was a little shocked when Phoebe Howard wrote that she does not suggest chopping the pillows. Wow! I have done the karate chop for years. Is it passé? Am I out of style?

Then I saw a recent blogger’s friend blog, Savvy Southern Style, and Kim posed the same question.

I am blogging now because I’ll be advising my Science Olympiad team at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond to compete in the State competition tomorrow. It will be a long day. Wish us luck. Geaux team!

For the Birds.....Southern Birds, that is!

As you know, I am in love with all things Southern as atested in my past blog post On Being Southern and my page My Southern Style.  A number of followers and friends of my blog have noticed the vivid oil paintings in many of my home pictures and have asked me to feature these oils in a future blog. Well, today is your lucky day. Today, I feature the beautiful Southern bird oils hanging in various rooms of my home.

After my mom’s stroke in Fall of 2009, I was going back and forth from NOLA to Thibodaux on a weekly basis. BFF DTW of Chic Chateau asked me if I would be interested in doing some work to help the store out with a client or two. I jumped at the chance since I’d been spending many days and nights in Thibodaux. I fell in love with the array of bird oils available in the shoppe. Much of my paychecks went to purchasing these magnificent oils. I am in love with my vast collection.

The oils are all handpainted by various artists. Many are commissioned by Chic Chateau.  They are all purchased from a Fine Art Co. that commissions artists to paint requested subject matter. Chic Chateau requests southern birds, landscapes, jazz, southern themes, etc. DTW has also sent photographs to be painted. A few years ago she also submitted a photo of Thibodaux’s own Saint Joseph Co-Cathedral and had several painted.

 Chic Chateau "hand" picks many oils at trade shows or from detailed photographs.

I hope you enjoy these lovely Southern bird oils as much as J & I do.
