December at Acorn Cottage: A Moody Christmas in the Den & Dining Rooms

 I don’t believe I’ve shared the den and dining rooms since they were painted back in September, so Christmas felt like the perfect time for their debut. Both spaces were color-drenched in Rain by Sherwin-Williams, a rich, moody hue that completely transformed these rooms. The depth of color adds such an intimate, cozy feeling—especially in the den—making it the ideal spot for movie watching on chilly December evenings.

For Christmas, the décor in these rooms leans very traditional, which feels especially beautiful against the dramatic paint color. At the window, a custom shiny brite ornament wreath welcomes you. I enlisted a local artist, the talented @vintageshinybrites, to create this piece. She also crafted the custom ornament tree in the sunroom, and I love how her work ties the holiday story of the house together with sparkle and nostalgia.

The dining area is dressed for the season in one of my longtime favorites—plaid. The table is covered in classic plaid linens, setting the tone for festive gatherings and holiday meals. Overhead, the chandelier is strung with red shiny ornament garlands, casting the most beautiful glow in the evenings. There’s just something magical about the way the ornaments catch the light after the sun goes down.

Throughout both spaces, magnolia garlands and red velvet ribbons add layers of texture and timeless Southern charm. And of course, no holiday setting is complete without scent—Nest Holiday candles fill the air with that unmistakable Christmas fragrance, wrapping the rooms in warmth and cheer.

These rooms may be moody in color, but at Christmastime they are filled with light, tradition, and the simple joy of the season.

Tis the Season {Acorn Cottage: Den}

 The den is the room where J and I spend the most time, where we watch TV and share a cocktail or two. We love to add seasonal decor to this area of the home. Enjoy the tour of the den.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

It's Fall Y'all {Thanksgiving: In the Den}

 Thanksgiving decor in the den is minimal, but it certainly packs a seasonal punch.

You've seen some of my blue and white painted pumpkins in an earlier post, but I have not shared the white pumpkins which are housed in a giant clam shell.

The desk arrangement is also filled with autumnal shades.

One and a half more days of school. Bring on the break! We all need this one.

Acorn Cottage {Den}

 The sunlight was so beautiful yesterday evening that I decided to finally take current photos of the back den. The rear den is where J and I spend most of our time lounging and watching T.V.

We recently added a new skirted storage ottoman, and the fabric is Schumacher. I love the bamboo trellis pattern. Touches of coral (or as James Farmer says "carl") in the pillows and throws adds to the coziness of the room. You may also notice a new rug. The colors of the rug help to give the room a relaxed, homey feel. There is definitely a comfort-level to the den.

Oh! A new oyster plate by Bridgeman Pottery purchased from Garden & Gun's Fieldshop hangs next to a Hunt Slonem paiting.

It's Christmas Time {Acorn Cottage: Den}

 There is not much Christmas in the den, but there are minor signs of the season. I apologize for the poor quality photos as the light was weird that day.

A small tree decorated in pheasant ornaments, feathers, and leopard balls with small white lights is festive especially when illuminated at night.

Springs of greenery tied with a simple red satin sash also signal the season.

I'll share more of the arrangement between the den and kitchen in a future post. I have to get a better photo.

Acorn Cottage {The Den}

 During the period of quarantine (Phase 1), J & I decided to do some redecorating around the house. I know! I know! We just moved in less than a couple years ago, but the den area always bothered me.

Initially when we moved in, we purchased a slip-covered sectional sofa. It was very comfortable, but it never looked "clean". The slip-covers stretched and never seemed to fit perfectly.

One night, J came to bed and whispered to me that he had ordered a sofa to replace the sectional. I awoke fast. A sofa? Which one? From where? Which color? My head was spinning. We had talked about the navy blue velvet Paidge sofa from West Elm before, but I did not think we were ready for it just then. The pandemic makes one do crazy things.

We already had the dark green velvet Paidge sofa in the sunroom and actually LOVE its size and feel. After a couple months, we sold the sectional and the navy sofa arrived. We couldn't be happier, though this started a domino effect for sure - a new swivel chair, a new ottoman, new pillows, new throws. You know how it works, right?

Here is how the den looks today. We added hits of an Hermes - orange to accent the navy sofa. I love the combo of colors and how well they play with the custom art work.
